Application to GEOSS
The application of unique identifiers to GEOSS has two main components, what the data providers should do and what the GCI should do. From the data provider point of view, there needs to be a guidance document that recommends a beneficial and practical solution for them to implement. From the GCI point of view, there needs to be an implementation plan that realizes the functionality necessary to guard against duplicate data resources. However, it may take some time before wide adoption of a solution for unique identifiers. Therefore, the SIF needs to also consider a way in which the GCI (in particular, the CSR and DAB) can determine duplication of resources without the utilization of unique identifiers.
To support the search for a practical solution to duplicate data resources handled by the GCI, the SIF will reach out to various agencies, organizations, and data providers that are already solving this problem. The table below will be used to collect this information and support further discussions about practical solutions to the problem of duplicate data resources.
